Verizon FiOS announces rate hikes

Today, Verizon announced its first rate hike, increasing the average monthly bill for video services by about 5%. The rate hikes will only affect new customers, plus existing customers that make changes to their account after January 14, 2007. The changes will not affect existing customers so long as they do not make changes to their account.

The most popular programming package, FiOS TV Premier, will increase from $39.95 to $42.99 per month. Most movie packages will see an increase of $1.00 to $1.04 per month. The rental cost for the standard set-top boxes rises $1.04 to $4.99 per month, while the HDTV set-top and HDTV digital video recorder (DVR) increase by $0.04 per month. Premium adult pay-per-view will get the largest rate hike, with a jump from $11.95 to $14.99.

Verizon FiOS did not specifically address the reasons for the price increase, but recently announced agreements to add a number of new channels, including AMC, IFC, WE tv, and Fuse, and several additional regional sports networks, including MSG, FSN New York, FSN New England, FSN New England HD, and Comcast Sportsnet HD (Philly).

I got my rate-hike letter in the mail today. It said I had until 1/7 to add services under the old rate, of course today is the 10th.

I hope they add some new HD channels in the coming year. DirecTV just announced they will be adding a slew of new HD channels. I really want FIOS to keep ahead as they are now. Get on the ball.

Oh and Comcast is launching Tivo software on their Motorola boxes. Verizon needs to call Tivo and talk about this since they have the same Motorola boxes.

Do these things and you can raise my rates a few more times - I won’t mind.
